California, here I am

CALIFORNIA, HERE I AM
By Christopher Wood

William Lock is in L.A., trying to use his boozy, womanising father’s shrinking band of contacts to gain a foothold in the movie business. Not easy at the best of times, but when a rental car disappears into a canyon and Will bumps into an old school chum and loses his heart to beautiful, enigmatic Rashmi, his life is never going to be the same again.

With Will and his dangerously unpredictable father we survive in Beverly Hills, attempt to hack it in Hollywood, party in salubrious Santa Barbara, hit the slopes in sophisticated Sun Valley and succumb to a date with destiny on a strange Caribbean island where a dark secret from the past and a present mystery await their resolution.

A very funny, shrewd and horribly accurate novel about the movie business, Hollywood-style, written with sustained brio and mordant intelligence. "California, here I am" is also an affecting and moving chronicle of a son’s rackety relationship with his father.
WILLIAM BOYD.

This is the funniest and shrewdest Hollywood novel I've ever read, and it's a cliffhanger of a story, too.  The insider/outsider perspectives of the father-son duo make for inspired comic conflict and suspense.  I think "California, here I am" will become one of the classics of Hollywood fiction, along with F. Scott Fitzgerald's Pat Hobby stories, Nathaniel West's "The Day of the Locust," Budd Schulberg's "What Makes Sammy Run" and Gavin Lambert's "The Slide Area".
FRANCES DOEL, Concorde - New Horizons Corporation.

California, here I am was nominated for the MAN Booker Prize 2005.
